Elegant, energetic, and dramatic dance photography is both a visual treat and a study of movement. Regardless of style and no matter the method I aim to convey the spirit and skill of a dancer. Creating unique, powerful, transformative visuals that are designed to stop viewers, captivate their imagination and bring them into the theatre, I will help you build a unique concept around the genre of dance you do.
Dance is the hidden language of the soul – Martha Graham
Conceptual Portraiture is the genre of photography that illustrates an idea, story or concept. I’ve developed a love for human movement or rhythm. I’ve explored the art of the 2.5D effect whereby I use various elements of motion combined with the still photographs that I do, thereby creating cinemagraphs. This is a unique concept which is not used often in the global genre of dance photography. I enjoy building bespoke concepts whereby we take a form of dance and photograph the dancers in the environment which is in stark contrast to where they would normally dance, so creating juxtaposition with the artform.
The 2 genres which I feel are not celebrated enough are Traditional Highland Dancing and Irish Dancing. These unique dance forms are my first passion, closely followed by most other dance styles and techniques.
The idea behind conceptual dance photography is to highlight the human body and movement, thereby creating artistic and creative portraiture. What sets me apart from other dance photographers is combining motion videos with still photographs. There is a deeply theatrical feel to this genre of photography and I feel that it is an exploratory process to create something unique and profound to showcase costumes, dress and accessories as well as the capabilities of the body. The highlight in my portfolios is my focus on Highland and Irish Dancing genres.
The first step is to meet with the choreographers for your dance studio. We will discuss the look and feel your studio represents and I’ll study the brand identity during this phase of the project. I will build a concept which I will then present to the decision makers of the studio. We will expand more on the look and feel, discuss special effects, props and much more during the 2nd phase of the project. Phase 3 will be when we book location and date, and ensure that all props and equipment are onsite for the Photo Shoot. All clearances will be obtained, all permissions will be in place and we will be ready to photograph the concept. I work very close with my business partner who is a videographer and you may choose to have various aspects of the concept delivery videoed as possible social media content releases. This aspect will be discussed during Phase 1 of the project, and may be booked independently as on-going content creation for your studio.
